Where Would You Use A Candle Lantern?

By Merry Smith

Candle lanterns are usually used outside in the yard, garden, deck or patio. They are great for entertaining at night- when the sun goes down the lanterns can be hung in the trees or from around the deck and create a magical atmoshere. The candles give subdued lighting that does not detract from the event, but can add to it. Anywhere you would choose to be entertaining outside is a suitable place to have a candle lantern. Another use for a candle lantern is when camping, there are some specialist designs for travelling used including the UCO candle lantern. These lanterns need to to be light weight, small and easy to look after.

Other Uses Of A Candle Lantern

Candle lanterns can also be used to provide mosquito or insect repelling effects, just choose candle infused with citronella or other bug repellents to create a safe area for your guests to talk.

Candle lanterns are candle holders that can also be used for those times when the power is out, they are safer than just candles alone, as the candle is contained, and can be safely carried around.

I have heard of glass candle candles called ZNICZ, which are Polish lanterns. These are used outside for various functions and even to decorate graves at funerals.

Styles of Candle Lantern

Wherever you decide to hang a candle lantern, there will be a style to suit the theme of your event or your patio decor. Lanterns can be made in a variety of materials. Fireproof materials are the best choice, and metal is popular. Metal is often painted and there is often a choice of color for any one kind of candle lantern. Some candle lanterns are the traditional lantern shape and have glass panes which help to intensify the light from the candle and prevent it going out in the wind. Some styles have mirrors on the bottom which can help to reflect the light.

Lanterns can be any shape or size, very small outdoor candle lanterns will only use tea lights whereas a larger lantern can use a pillar candle. The most common style of candle lantern is the traditional lantern shape, but square, and multi sided shapes are also common. Most lanterns have a means of accessing the candle to light it and to change it. This can be via a hinged door or by a lifting the top part off, or by sliding a section out of the way.

There are many themed lanterns such as the Moroccan candle lantern or decorative candle lantern to suit your patio.

Most candle lanterns use either tea light candles or small pillar candles, but it becoming more common to find the solar candle lantern.

Safety Notes

Always bear in mind the safety aspects of having candle around.

Never leave the burning candle unattended,

always make sure the lantern is securely fastened to the gutter,

keep it away from flammable materials

Keep all candle away from the reach of children and pets.

Use the correct candle in each lantern. Do not use votive candles unless they are in a votive candle holder (else they melt everywhere)

Handle lighted lanterns carefully as they can become very hot.

I liked the idea to use citronella candles in lanterns as I have never thought of that use. At mycandlelantern.com, we have the candle lanterns that are featured here. I will definitely be using the citronella candles in the summertime. Thanks for the tip!
